Learnings & Lessons
A spin on the typical resume, here's what I did and what it taught me.
Creative Director- Copywriter
-Climbing up from copywriter, senior copywriter, style lead, associate creative director, to creative director taught me determination and the importance of listening to every voice.
- Graduating from the 9-month Rising Leader at Dell program strengthened and reaffirmed my confidence in my leadership skills: highest marks in team happiness, empathy, and creativity.
-Overseeing all monitors, mice, keyboards, docks, speakerphones, headsets, accessories, and webcams for all Dell commercial, consumer, and Alienware lines taught me how to balance delegating with attention to detail.
-Working on every type of asset taught me the ins and outs of production and how to grow a creative's confidence on set: for a writer to improve visuals and an art director to question copy.
-AI exploration taught me how to use it as a tool to alleviate clerical work and free up creatives to create.
-Training and onboarding every new writer taught me how to work with every type of person and harness their individual motivators.
Teacher
-Elementary school classroom management taught me the best ways to motivate, guide, and listen to my team. I always ask questions and lead them to discovering the answers; It's the only way to mentor.
-Working at SJSU in the Writing Center made me a grammar god. Slight hyperbole, but my copyediting skills are English-professor level.
Writer
-Writing 4 different brand voice style guides for different companies taught me the importance of tone and authenticity.
-Writing scripts, manuals, OA, social, banners, concept pitches, blogs, brochures, web pages, print ads, infographics, news articles, and play reviews as a member of the press gave me the skill to write for any medium.
-Self-publishing my own book taught me how to make your goal happen, even if you have to teach yourself the steps.
Plant Wrangler
-Hard work isn't hard if you love what you do, so focus on what you love. Being grateful on the farm is a must, and work ethic and positive focus has followed me for every job in my life.
-Designing potted arrangements at Summer Winds Garden Center taught me patience, color theory and creativity. Knowing which plants not just look good together, but also benefit each other for growth is key.
-Working customer service taught me how to keep my smile on no matter the issue (or Karen).
